I was so tired I was just trying not to fall asleep, and I understood almost nothing.

Well, this past week has been pretty crazy. The flight took probably about 33 hours. We left Monday morning and got to Japan Tuesday night. My companion is Japanese and he speaks almost no English, so have the time I:m not completely sure whats going on, but with our dictionaries it works out ok, in the long run it will probably be better because you learn a lot faster with a native companion. He is considered one of the best missionaries in the mission, right now we have 2 progressing investigators, the first day I got to our apartment he said we were going to teach a lesson that night, so we walked over to the church, and I was so tired I was just trying not to fall sleep, and I understood almost nothing, but since then I can understand a little bit better but I just catch words here and there.

Ishinomaki (石巻市 Ishinomaki-shi?)

Our branch here in Ishinomaki (right on the coast of Sendai) oh and btw the Sendai mission is the whole map from in the book, the whole top part of the island) it has about 30 members, maybe a little less. But they are all great people.

Ishinomaki is a city located in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. As of January 1, 2010, the city has an estimated population of 164,294 and a population density of 295.83 persons per km². The total area is 555.35 km². Wikipedia

Area: 214.4 sq miles (555.4 km²)

Ishinomaki and the 2011 earthquake, tsunami
The city was among the most seriously affected by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Several tsunamis, up to about 10 metres (33 ft) high traveled inland up to 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from the coast. The tsunamis destroyed around 80% of the 700 houses in the coastal whaling port of Ayukawa, and the Kadonowaki neighborhood was largely leveled. Approximately 46% of the city was inundated by the tsunami.

As of 17 June 2011, a total of 3,097 deaths had been confirmed in Ishinomaki due to the tsunami, with 2,770 unaccounted for. Approximately 29,000 city residents lost their homes.

The earthquake shifted the city southeast and downward, lowering it by as much as 1.2 metres (3.9 ft) in some areas and causing it to flood twice daily at high tide. A once sandy beach in the Kadonowaki area has completely disappeared and tides now reach the wall that once separated the beach from the road. Near the Mangakan Island, a walkway with benches is now partially submerged in the river.

Culture Shock and New Dialect

My first reaction when I got here, I couldn't believe I was actually in Japan, huge culture shock, everyone is speaking Japanese, everything is written in Japanese, Im like the only person in this whole city who isn't Japanese so I get weird looks from people because they aren't used to seeing white people here, also the school girls think its really funny seeing americans so they always laugh when they see me, and Ill say something in Japanese and then as we walk away they will say hello nice to meet you in English and then start to laugh again. It was a crazy start, we went straight from the Tokyo airport onto a plane to Sendai, which I was asleep right when I sat down, I was super tired the first few days. After I got paired with my companion (which everyone says he is the best missionary in the mission) we started walking he said the apartment was about 2 hours away, we went down into the subway and he told me to sit by myself so that we could talk to as many people as possible, and I barely know and Japanese so when I ask someone a question and they respond I usually have no idea what they are saying. Also in Sendai they speak in a weird dialect, especially the older people out in the country. So I have an even harder time understanding what anyone is saying. The first few days were pretty rough but now I have a pretty good understanding of whats going on. its really nice here, I love all the Japanese people, I love going into the stores and seeing everything in Japanese, and I love all the cool Japanese buildings. We went tracking to some really rich peoples homes, and you have to be super polite with everything so I mostly didn't talk because polite Japanese is really hard to say. My companion also left me at one of the doors so I had to talk to the person by myself. Luckily my Japanese is good enough that I can at least introduce my self as a missionary for the church and my name and stuff but thats about it. One thing that was a nice surprise is that one of the Elders I was with in my zone in the MTC is in the same apartment as me, so I see him all throughout the day. Its hard preparing for lessons because my companion will say what we are teaching and then he will say you talk about being cleansed from sin, or something like that and I don't really know much Japanese to say more then a sentence or two, but I have definitely been retaining things easier since I got here.

I'll see if I can send pictures next time, it already started snowing here, but it has been off and on.
anyways, I'll talk to you guys again next week.

Elder Ashton Canepari Has Arrived In Sendai, Japan! Week 9

A Letter From Sister Rasmussen, Sendai Mission Mom

Sendai Airport

Dear Parents,

We wanted you to know that your missionary arrived in Sendai last evening safe and sound AND tired! We welcomed 10 new missionaries, fed them soup and sent them to bed as quickly as possible. Today they were in training from 8am-2pm and then they left with their new trainer/companion for their first area of service. I have attached 2 pictures; one at the airport shortly after they landed in Sendai and the other was taken with their trainers before the left for their areas this afternoon. They are happy to be finally be here and everyone was healthy. (I know you moms want to know that) Thank you for the special Christmas letters you sent them. Surely they will be uplifted when they finally get a minute to read them-maybe tonight before they go to bed. President Rasmussen had a chance to interview each missionary and was very happy to tell me what a wonderful group of missionaries they are. Obviously, they have been well prepared by their parents and families. Thank you for sharing them with the Sendai Mission. We have fallen in love with each of them already.

Love,
Sister Rasmussen
Sendai Mission Mom

PS: Their Preparation Day is Monday (Sunday in America)

Saayonara U.S.A. Week 8

Thanksgiving and Saying Sayonara (Good-By} to the U.S.A.

Hey

So today has been super busy so I barely have anytime to email but I'll get out what I can. We just got done cleaning in the temple for the last 4 hours and we're about to go to a devotional and one of the apostles are going to be there.

Anyway, I got my flight plan I'm taking American Airlines I'm leaving from the Salt Lake City Airport at 7:25 AM this Monday. I'll be arriving in LAX at about 8:25 and I will be there until 11:15 (California time) so sometime during that block I will find a chance to call home.

After that I'll be heading to the Tokyo Narita Airport which I should be getting to at about 4:20 PM on Tuesday, its like a 12 hour flight and that is what time it will be in Japan, but remember that they are like 16 hours ahead of us. Then at 6:55 PM on Tuesday I board a plane to Sendai Japan and I should be arriving there at about 8:00 PM. The first 2 days I will be staying in the mission home.

Well, I think that's all I needed to say hopefully I'm not forgetting anything, we are about to leave to a devotional, one of the apostles are speaking today.

We also had one speak on Thanksgiving, it was Russell M. Nelson. My district and the other missionaries here put together about 350,000 meals

(link to photos and news story)

and then we watched Ephraim's Rescue which was a great movie.

Well next time I email I'll be in Japan! I look forward to talking to you on Monday. Probably expect the call around 9am or 10am but I can't be sure of anything.

Thanks for the package! Everyone loved the cinnamon rolls!

Sack Lunch for Thanksgiving-Week 7

 An MTC Thanksgiving is Coming

おは世ございます。(good morning)

Well, I don't think the prophet is coming, but a general authority is coming for sure. Thanksgiving is going to be pretty weird here, we actually aren't getting anything for dinner other than a sack lunch, I guess they don't want to make the staff work. So my district was assigned to put together the sack lunches for everyone.

To bad to hear about Ender's Game bombing, I was really looking forward to that movie, Bret's uncle that we met at Comic Con actually worked on the props for that movie, he made the weapons and everything. We got to see part of the set and some of the props while I was in San Diego. Not surprised to hear about The Hunger Games, everyone was super excited for that one, have you seen it? I didn't like the first one very much, but the book was good. Well, I'll update you all on the travel plans next week.

A Second Hand Story

A few weeks back  Elder Ashton Canepari was struggling learning the Japanese lessons.  He was having a discussion with his teacher about "Star Wars".  His teacher informed Ashton that no one knew more about "Star Wars" than the teachers room mate.  He told Ashton that when his room mate played "Star Wars" Trivial Pursuit
he has only missed one question.

The question; What are the first two lines in the Empire Strikes Back?

Elder Ashton Canepari folded his arms and leaned back onto the wall, then said "Eco three to Eco seven.  Han old buddy, do you read me?"

At that his teacher told Elder Ashton Canepari that if he put that much time and effort in learning the lessons he would be a "Rock Star" when he gets to Japan.  That lesson changed everything for him and he remembered his conversation with President Treadway.  He prayed and he put his whole mind, might and strength into learning. His skills began to really improve from that time forward.

The biggest star wars fan?
My the spirit (force) be with you young Elder (Padawan)!

Travel Plans are on the way!-Week 6

November 19, 2013

Finding Out About The Philippines

I'm doing good, I think just about everyone in my district has had a turn being sick, germs spread here like wildfire. L. Tom Perry talked about a lot of things, I think he spoke for like an hour, he mainly talked about the importance of missionary work and why it is being quickened. He also shared us a cool story about the missionaries in the Philippians during this huge hurricane that happened a few weeks ago, no one told us about it so the only reason we even heard about it is because one of the Elders in our district has a friend over there, and he emailed him saying that he didn't know if he was even going to survive the storm. I guess when news of the hurricane got out everyone was trying to get out of the country, and even though all of the missionaries had plane tickets people were paying large amounts of money to take their seats so they were stranded in the airport, anyways he then went on to say that a military commander saw them and gave them a personal flight in one of the ships off of the island. We're looking forward to Thanksgiving because there is usually an apostle that comes during holidays like that, and its basically an extra P-Day for us.

We get our travel plans next week so I can let you know exactly when I'll be leaving, it will probably be at like 3 am though, we will either be going to LAX or San Fran, then we have a 10 hour flight over the ocean to the Tokyo airport, then I have like an 6 hour train to Sendai, I'll be staying at the mission home there for the first 2 days, that's all I know so far, also I believe I get to make a 5 or 10 minute phone call to you guys when I'm in the airport in California I think it will be on a Monday morning though, so if no one will be around I can just leave a message, but hopefully someone will be home.

I heard that Ender's Game was good, I'm hoping it followed the book but I don't think you read that one, its a really great series though. Good to know that Gravity was good, I saw a trailer for it at Comic Con and it looked really weird, Bret and Brian both told me about Star Wars, so I'm really glad I'll be back before that comes out, we don't get much information on anything going on out in the world including world news, but I guess that's probably for the best, we have like 6 hours of study time everyday so we get a lot done, anyways I've gotta go get ready for tonight's devotional, I just got back from the temple, sadly it closes tomorrow until sometime next year so I wont be able to do anymore sessions while I'm here, oh and tell River that I sent him an email last week, and I was disappointed to see that I haven't gotten a response, I'm sure he doesn't check his email very often though of course, I'm going to try and send out some actual hand written letters this week, if I get a chance.

あいしてます。(love you)

It looks like this email will have to do for everyone else also because I gotta go, bye.

Thanks for the Packages!-Week 5

November 12, 2013

No time for writing L. Tom Parry is on the way!

Thanks for the packages! I really appreciate them! And for the CD's, unfortunately I can't listen to them in the resident halls so I wont be able to listen to them until I'm actually in the field. We have L. Tom Parry coming to speak tomorrow so we are all super excited about that, the 日本語 and everything is going well, we had TRC again yesterday and got to talk to a really cool guy he took that picture of us. Anyways I've got to go, I'll email again next week!

Konbanwa (good evening)-Week 4

Let It Snow!

こんばんわ (konbanwa/good evening)
November 5, 2013

The weeks all feel the same right now so I don't really know whats new to really talk about, our district gets to go to the temple every P-Day, we actually just got back from a sealing session. We now have 3 "investigators" that we are teaching here, to are our teachers and the other one is a district member. Once a week we do this thing called TRC (training resource center) where we teach/talk to actual 日本人 (nihonjin/Japanese people) that are members of the church. Most of them are just college students at BYU, but there are a few older native 日本人 but when you teach them they just start talking to you in 英語 (eigo/English) and correct your 日本語 (nihongo/Japanese). The guy looks just like Mr. Miagi from the Karate Kid which is really funny. Also its started snowing last week, which is really weird because I'm not used to that kind of てんき (tenki/weather) it should be completely covered in snow here at the MTC before we leave for 日本 (nihon/Japan). The senior group of missionaries (Dai senpai/ダイセンパイ) left last week so we moved up from こはい(kohai) to センパリ(senpai) we're almost half way done here, the new こはい got here last すいよおび (getsuyobi/Wednesday).

Anyways, あいしてます (aishitemasu/love you)

Good Morning-Week 3

October 29, 2013
おは世ございます。(good morning)

The Majority of the Elders in my district (except the guy on the right)

Not much has really changed over this week, and time seems to be going much faster now the senior group of 日本語 (Japanese) missionaries just left and knew ones are coming in tomorrow, so we are about a third of the way done here. Last week I stopped saying prayers in 英語 (English) and I wont say another English prayer again on my mission, if there is something I really need to say then I have to learn how in 日本語。 I'm now focusing on learning how to bear my testimony in 日本語。 Learning now the grammar structure works comes a lot faster when you are learning how to do things like pray and testify, a few weeks in I realized I was going about everything all wrong, I hadn't been working with all my heart, might, mind, and strength like I told President Treadway I would. I said a prayer for like 10 minutes (in English) asking for help, and

everything became very clear and I was able to say a prayer in 日本語 almost perfectly immediately after, last にちよび (Sunday) we watched the Joseph Smith Restoration movie in 日本語 and I was able to understand a lot of it. I'm looking forward to getting that package!

Dorio (Companion), Shimai (Sisters) and Nihonjin (Japanese people)-Week 2

October 22, 2013

Dorio, why do you only want to hang with the Shimai?

Well, a few days ago I got sick as a dog, I've had a really bad cold, but there's no such thing as a day of at the MTC, even on P-Day. So I have still been getting up at 6:30 and going to class and everything, I just haven't been as effective.

Nihongo (Japanese) has been coming along pretty good. We learned how to pray and say our testimonies in the first few days, I was having some trouble with the language even though we have mostly just gone over things I already new, but I understand it a lot better, we SYL every new word we learn, we also have some missionaries in our district that have been living in Japan for a few years and they speak really good Nihongo which is very helpful. I've been having lots of issues with my dorio (companion, the R is a cross between L and D). He is the only one in my district that I haven't really gotten along with, he hates socializing with the elders, he always just wants to go off and talk to the shimai (sisters), but we're working on it, we have companionship inventories every few days and those are really helpful.

Every few weeks we have native Nihonjin (Japanese people) come for a few weeks to learn about how to teach the gospel, and then they go back to Nihon. We play 4-square with them during Gym time, and its fun trying to talk with them with the little Nihongo we know. One of my friends in my district likes to learn random stuff and he tells them things like "I like to eat people some times" or "I am an elephant" , he was winning in 4-square and he tried to tell them that he was very skilled, but the word for skilled and the word for juice are very similar so he actually told them that he was very juiced, and they all started laughing. I was talking with one of the Nihonjin and I was asking her where she was from and what she liked to do (in Japanese obviously because they know almost no English) I was telling her I liked to play Yugioh and stuff and where I was from, and then my friend (the same friend I was just talking about) told me to tell her something, I shouldn't have listened but I did and When I told her she gave me a weird look, and he started laughing and he told me I told her she was very beautiful, if we were't in the MTC I probably would have punched him, but we mess around a lot when we can, it makes the time go by faster, anyway I'll email again next week!

My first day of class

Me and my companion, Choro Jonathon Pierson

Ohayoo Gozaimasu! From Canepari Choro (Elder Canepari) Week #1

The MTC-Week Number One

Tue, Oct 15, 2013 at 9:06 AM,

Ohayoo Gozaimasu! (good morning)  Found out that P-day is actually on Tuesday.  Even though its only been a week I feel like I have been here for months.  Everyone in my district is Subarashi! (awesome)  And guess what, Jonathon Pierson is my companion...Which has actually been a challenge, we're very different and we have had some issues, but god clearly had a plan for us, we are the only 2 in our district going to Sendai, everyone else is going to Tokyo.  Our teacher is awesome, we have like an 8 hour class of Nihongo (Japanese) everyday, the first 4 days he only spoke Nihongo, but then a few days ago he started speaking Eigo to us so he switches between the 2.  My time here has been the most spiritual and difficult time of my life, a week in and we have learned almost everything I learned in the first semester of Nihongo.  By the second day we already knew how to say our prayers in Japanese and bear our testimonies, the only time we can only speak N

Anyways, I hope everything is going well.
ihongo is during sacrament meeting, we all have to write talks in Nihongo each week and 2 people get picked on the spot to give their talk.  My first day here we were having a devotional and they asked if anyone could play the piano, no one said anything and then my companion looked at me, so I have played the piano everyday so far.  I've never spent so much time focusing on just reading the Morumon Sho (Book of Mormon).  Our third day we started teaching an "investigator" (he is a member of the church)  But each day we give him a 30 minute lesson and he only speaks Nihongo to us so that all we can speak to him also.
